Our interdisciplinary School of Literature and Languages brings together experts across multiple fields, including English literature, creative writing, film studies, translation studies, linguistics, and cultural studies. We maintain strong collaborations with Surrey's Department of Music and Media, where groundbreaking research also takes place. The Film Studies PhD program develops your critical analysis, research methodology, and academic expertise to prepare you for professional or scholarly pursuits, typically completed within three to four years of full-time study.
You'll work closely with both a primary and secondary supervisor who will provide regular feedback on your progress through scheduled meetings. Since we believe writing fosters deeper comprehension and innovative thinking, you'll begin submitting written assignments from the very beginning of your program.
During your initial year, you'll refine your research focus and outline your project framework with supervisory support. As you progress through years two and three, you'll develop greater independence while receiving guidance on conference presentations and academic publishing opportunities from your supervisors.
