The Film Studies Department runs a dynamic and extensive research initiative exploring worldwide cinema traditions, with faculty specialists covering everything from silent films to modern digital platforms, women's filmmaking to motion picture advocacy. Students benefit from cutting-edge resources such as customized lecture and viewing spaces, advanced 3D projection technology, VR equipment, and an archive containing more than 9,000 multimedia works. The Department also supports one of the UK's largest doctoral programs in Film Studies, with about 15 candidates pursuing diverse research projects from across five continents.
The doctoral program provides three years of guided research on an individual project, leading to a final dissertation. Students may opt for a fourth continuation year with academic support if required.
