This program provides a Single Honours degree that investigates humanity's history through diverse humanities and social science approaches, with opportunities for practical engagement with archaeological artifacts and field research.
Archaeology analyzes various forms of evidence documenting our past - from objects, structures, and settlements to complete landscapes - interpreting how civilizations have evolved. The curriculum covers global, European, and Irish/British archaeological periods from prehistoric eras to contemporary heritage studies. Queen's University Belfast ranks among the UK's top institutions for Archaeology, earning third place for student experience in the 2022 Times/Sunday Times Guide and maintaining its first-place position for student satisfaction in the 2022 Complete University Guide.
Queen's Archaeology program systematically builds both general and specialized knowledge through hands-on experiences including excavations, field studies, international trips, and laboratory work. Graduates pursue diverse career paths in commercial archaeology, surveying, heritage management, and other sectors within and beyond the heritage field.
Alongside the Single Honours BA in Archaeology and BSc in Archaeology-Palaeoecology, Queen's offers combined degrees pairing Archaeology (study of past human societies) and Palaeoecology (study of historical environments) with other disciplines like Languages, Geography, and History. All Single and Joint Honours programs include module options fully accredited by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) and University Archaeology UK (UAUK).
