Our Department ranks among the UK's foremost Linguistics research centers, achieving top marks in both the REF 2014 and RAE 2008 national evaluations. Our research spans linguistic structure analysis and language usage across diverse speech communities and social settings. We maintain an active schedule of academic events including seminars, reading circles, doctoral training sessions, and guest speaker presentations. Postgraduate students benefit from specialized instruction in research methods and linguistic subfields through our departmental workshops and advanced core training programs. We collaborate extensively with language specialists in the School focusing on French, German, and Hispanic studies. Students enjoy access to London's premier academic libraries alongside our dedicated facilities. The Department boasts custom-designed linguistics labs and a professional recording studio, equipped with cutting-edge recording technology, transcription tools, extensive public corpora, language analysis software, and designated workstations for graduate researchers and fellows.
For entry at PhD level, we would normally expect candidates to have an MA or equivalent. The Linguistics Department attracts the very best PhD candidates, and competition for places and for funding is at the highest level. IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall including 7.0 in Writing, and 5.5 in Reading, Listening and Speaking, TOEFL: 100 overall including 27 in Writing, 18 in Reading, 17 in Listening and 20 in Speaking.
