As a postgraduate research student, you'll find Geography and Environment to be an energetic and stimulating academic community, renowned for its welcoming and collaborative atmosphere. Our doctoral candidates play a crucial role in our research endeavors, engaging with innovative projects spanning our six core research areas. We strive to cultivate versatile scholars proficient in diverse scientific methodologies, research techniques, leadership qualities, and professional competencies. Our objective is to prepare doctoral candidates for future leadership roles, arming them with specialized knowledge in their disciplines, the capacity to transform research into real-world applications, and the skills to tackle complex societal and environmental issues. From 2014 to 2020, this approach resulted in 60% of our PhD graduates pursuing academic careers (including 12 faculty appointments and distinguished postdoctoral roles at institutions like Amsterdam, ETH Zurich, and Cornell). Additional graduates secured research-focused positions with organizations such as the Environment Agency, TfL, Severn Trent, Atkins Global, AECOM, and GEC.
