Keele University's Radiography and Medical Imaging research falls under two Faculty Research Themes: Prevention, Performance and Rehabilitation in the School of Allied Health Professions and Pharmacy, and Regenerative Medicine in the School of Life Sciences.
Overview
The School of Allied Health Professions
Research in this School focuses on enhancing imaging techniques, improving patient experiences, and assessing imaging services and care pathways. Our researchers participate actively in both UK and international radiography studies and are members of the EFRS Radiographer Research Network (RRN).
The program seeks to foster involvement in radiography and medical imaging research. We aim to expand our research community in line with our professional body's (SCoR) Research Strategy, increase research output, and facilitate the translation of findings into clinical practice. The School of Allied Health Professions, along with partner organizations (primarily the NHS, with additional connections to tertiary institutions and industry), provides all necessary research support. For project-specific questions, please reach out to relevant faculty members.
The School of Life Sciences
Bioengineering research explores two key areas: developing multifunctional biomaterials for tissue engineering (including cornea, bone, tendon, nerve, and cartilage applications) and employing non-destructive characterization techniques to monitor 3D scaffolds and tissue constructs both in vitro and in vivo.
This research program applies engineering approaches to translational medicine, emphasizing systematic methods for using specialized materials that interact with cellular systems and advanced monitoring techniques. Studies concentrate on regenerating and analyzing various tissues including bone, cartilage, blood vessels, cornea, retina, skin, and nerves. Experienced researchers lead these programs, supported by research fellows, associates, and students through seminars and a dedicated Research Committee. Additional support comes from NHS partnerships and industry collaborations. Note: Under UK visa rules, international fee-status students typically must enroll full-time unless pursuing Distance Learning programs.
