This program fulfills a key objective at Kent by empowering research students to embrace innovative approaches and interdisciplinary methods when investigating their topics. This PhD encompasses narrative non-fiction and various creative writing forms beyond poetry and novels. Our inaugural student in this program is examining identity through hip-hop culture, producing both an album and academic research.
Program Highlights
Our research programs integrate you into our dynamic university community, offering access to engaging events, research seminars, and optional MA modules (audit available with instructor approval). Many PhD candidates gain teaching experience starting in their second year.
Research students maintain regular contact with supervisors while participating in informal reading groups and seminars featuring contributions from peers, faculty, and guest speakers. The spring term brings specialized research skills workshops, allowing you to learn from departmental experts and postdoctoral researchers.
All advanced research candidates must complete the School and Faculty research methodology training programs.
