Microbiology and immunology represent two cutting-edge biological disciplines. When studied in tandem, these captivating fields allow us to investigate microbial control for disease prevention and numerous other applications. Microbiology stands as one of biology's most rapidly advancing research areas. Microbiologists engage in diverse work, from engineering bacteria to manufacture beneficial substances like human insulin, to employing pollutant-consuming microbes for environmental cleanup.Immunology examines the immune system's operations in both healthy and diseased states, along with its dysfunctions in conditions such as immunodeficiency and transplant rejection.Program overviewKeele's Microbiology and Immunology program fosters profound comprehension of fundamental molecular biology and biological mechanisms through these two interconnected modern bioscience fields. Our extensive lab curriculum incorporates various contemporary biochemical and molecular methods, equipping students with professional competencies. The program promotes experimental design skills through inquiry-based learning while cultivating both independent and collaborative abilities. In microbiology studies, you'll explore the biology, biochemistry, and physiology of viruses and microorganisms. The curriculum covers bacteria, fungi, and parasites, highlighting host-pathogen relationships, associated diseases, innovative diagnostic and therapeutic developments, plus their biotechnological uses and ecological significance.Immunology coursework investigates the immune system's role in health and disease. You'll examine human immune system diversity, its critical function in host-pathogen interactions, and how this knowledge informs novel biotechnological treatments and preventive measures like vaccines.Understanding immune component development and operation proves vital for comprehending autoimmune diseases and immune disorders. You'll learn how immune elements like antibodies enable precise molecular therapies for conditions including cancer.Foundation Year OptionOur Foundation Year offers an exceptional alternative pathway to Keele, providing specialized preparation for your degree with guaranteed undergraduate entry upon successful completion. This additional year enhances academic skills, broadens subject knowledge, deepens understanding of higher education, and crucially builds confidence.Keele University maintains consistent top rankings for student satisfaction, with over seven decades of foundation year experience.
