Microbiology and immunology represent two cutting-edge biological disciplines. When studied in combination, these captivating fields allow us to investigate microbial control for disease prevention and numerous other applications. Microbiology stands as one of biology's most rapidly advancing research areas. Microbiologists engage in diverse activities, from engineering bacteria to manufacture beneficial substances like human insulin, to utilizing pollutant-consuming microbes for environmental cleanup.Immunology investigates the immune system's operations in both healthy and diseased states, along with its dysfunctions in conditions such as immunodeficiency and transplant rejection.Program outlineOur MSci in Microbiology and Immunology features a thoughtfully structured curriculum that fosters both fundamental understanding and practical laboratory experience, equipping students with valuable transferable skills. The program emphasizes scientific literature analysis and communication skills, particularly during the fourth year, cultivating independent learning and advanced research capabilities. Core modules establish essential knowledge foundations, while optional courses allow specialization aligned with individual interests and career goals.Microbiology studies explore viral and microbial biology, biochemistry, and physiology, focusing on pathogens like bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Students investigate host-pathogen relationships, associated diseases, innovative diagnostic and therapeutic methods, plus microbial applications in biotechnology and ecosystem functions.Immunology coursework examines the immune system's role in health and disease, covering immune diversity, host-pathogen interactions, and biotechnological advances in disease management like vaccine development. Understanding immune component development and function proves crucial for comprehending autoimmune disorders and immunodeficiencies. Students also learn how immune elements like antibodies enable targeted therapies for conditions including cancer.Foundation Year optionOur Foundation Year offers an alternative pathway to Keele University, providing thorough preparation for degree studies with guaranteed undergraduate entry upon successful completion.Career prospectsThe extensive research training and project experience gained through the MSci program enhances competitiveness for PhD applications and positions in both industrial and academic settings. Graduates often pursue scientific careers in research or laboratory technology, or enter healthcare fields like medicine, nursing, or pharmaceutical development. The degree equips students with versatile skills applicable across science, education, and health sectors, while also providing a strong foundation for postgraduate studies.
