This program takes you from beginner-level British Sign Language (BSL) to professional proficiency in signed communication. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on language application, interpretation techniques, translation methods, communication theory, linguistic principles, and Deaf culture studies. Through intensive coursework, you'll gain cultural, social, political, and linguistic understanding to become thoughtful practitioners, ready for advanced academic pursuits. Graduates will achieve professional-level competence for practical BSL applications. During your third year, you'll undertake full-time placements with UK signing organizations or international partner institutions, enhancing your language abilities across diverse social and professional contexts. The final year offers immersive experiences working alongside professional interpreters in real-world settings. Successful graduates qualify for registration with NRCPD (the UK's national sign language interpreting body) and SASLI (Scotland's interpreting association). The program's industry-focused approach prepares you for diverse career opportunities, equipping you with professional-grade skills for immediate employment after graduation.
Year 1 Standard entry requirements - Highers AABB including main language at A (over two sittings), A-Levels BBC (including main language), Int. Baccalaureate 30 points (with main language at Higher Level 5), BTEC DDM (Main language at A-Level B or equivalent required), HNC B in graded unit (with main language Higher A or A-Level B grade or equivalent) HND BB. Please check that you meet our University-wide National 5/GCSE (or equivalent) English and Maths requirements. Minimum entry requirements - Highers BBBC including main language at B (over two sittings), A-Levels BCC including main language at B. Year 2 - As our languages courses include a compulsory year abroad at Level 3, the normal entry route for all languages courses is to Year 1 of a four-year honours course. However, candidates with outstanding Advanced Highers or A-Level results may be considered on an individual basis. Year 3 - As our languages courses include a compulsory year abroad at Level 3, the normal entry route for alllanguages courses is to Year 1 of a four-year honours course. However, candidates with outstanding Advanced Highers or A-Level results may be considered on an individual basis. IELTS Academic 6.0 with no score lower than 5.5. TOEFL iBT 79 (including reading 18, listening 17, speaking 20, and writing 21).
