The Integrated PhD with Studies is a combined degree program that merges a traditional PhD with coursework similar to a taught Master's degree, all completed within a four-year timeframe (or eight years for part-time students). In their first year, participants enroll as taught postgraduate students. Following the MA structure, they complete five modules: three elective 30-credit courses along with two core modules - Resources, Methods and Interpretation plus a brief Dissertation. These core components, however, require higher achievement standards than regular MA assessments. As part of the Resources, Methods and Interpretation module, candidates must develop a 2,000-word research proposal for their doctoral dissertation. This prepares them to begin independent research by Year 2. The subsequent three years follow the conventional UK PhD model, culminating in a 100,000-word thesis. Successful completion of Year 1 allows students to graduate with an MA degree if they prefer not to continue to doctoral studies, selecting the MA title that matches their chosen electives. This program is designed for aspiring Theology and Religion researchers who need additional preparation before undertaking independent study. Applicants may enter directly from undergraduate studies or with some postgraduate experience, and the program welcomes international candidates. Students from educational systems where PhDs typically include coursework may find this structure particularly appealing. Additionally, international applicants might benefit from streamlined visa processes for a single four-year program compared to separate MA and PhD applications.
