The Department of Religions and Philosophies at SOAS fosters a dynamic, engaging, and cross-disciplinary research atmosphere. We deliver personalized research guidance across diverse religious traditions and comparative subjects. Our supervisors are leading specialists with deep expertise in their respective religions, cultures, languages, and regions. Beyond one-on-one mentorship, the Department provides structured research training: a mandatory writing workshop for first-year MPhil students preparing for PhD upgrade, weekly PhD seminars in years 2-3 for thesis feedback, and interdisciplinary departmental seminars where staff and students present ongoing research. Students can additionally participate in lectures, seminars, and conferences organized by SOAS's specialized research centers, including Jewish Studies, Japanese Religions, Buddhist Studies, Jaina Studies, and World Christianity. These centers host regular evening lectures, workshops, and international conferences featuring scholars from across the UK, Europe, and worldwide.
