The School of Modern Languages provides an opportunity to pursue a PhD/MPhil through Practice in Translation Studies (three years full-time or six years part-time). This program involves creating an extensive translation between one of SML's language specialties, paired with a critical or theoretical analysis. With a strong history of supporting postgraduate scholars, the School ensures each student receives guidance from one or two supervisors based on their research focus. Participants enjoy comprehensive access to computing resources (including translation memory tools), library services, and all School facilities such as the film collection. A designated postgraduate workspace within the School is available for regular student use.

Applicants should normally have a first or upper second class honours undergraduate degree and a Masters degree in a relevant subject.
