The School of Literature and Languages houses the Centre for Translation Studies, a globally recognized hub for academic excellence in translation and interpreting. Our investigations mirror the dynamic progression of this field, addressing both technology-driven language services and the quality, ethical, and societal aspects of this rapidly transforming sector.
Established in 1982, we've secured distinguished grants that have enabled us to advance theoretical frameworks in translation and interpreting while ensuring practical relevance through examining balanced human-technological collaboration, emerging audiovisual translation methods, and groundbreaking interpreting techniques.
We merge our understanding of translation and interpreting as human endeavors with specialized knowledge in computational linguistics, AI-driven language processing, remote communication systems, and human-machine interfaces. Furthermore, our examination of social factors in translation/interpreting processes facilitates thoughtful coordination between human expertise and automated solutions.
As automation revolutionizes language services into one of the most rapidly expanding sectors worldwide, this technological shift presents numerous possibilities. Yet comprehending technology's full implications, addressing potential limitations, and developing creative responses demands innovative research methodologies. Each PhD candidate receives guidance from two supervisors who provide monthly progress reviews, constructive feedback, and professional advice. Additionally, you'll engage with fellow researchers from the Centre and University working on projects aligned with your academic focus.
