The University of Leicester's Modern Languages department ranks among the UK's premier institutions for language, translation, and cultural studies. Our curriculum encompasses Francophone, Italian, and Hispanic languages and cultures, along with Translation Studies through our specialized Center for Translation and Interpreting. Additionally, we provide language courses for non-majors via our Languages at Leicester extracurricular initiative. Doctoral candidates undertake self-directed research projects with support from faculty advisors. The maximum enrollment duration before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time or 7 years for part-time students. Typically, active research (including experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) spans 3-3.5 years full-time or 6-6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a 12-month writing-up extension. The combined research and writing phases cannot surpass the maximum registration period. Theses must not generally exceed 80,000 words, demonstrate original scholarly contributions, and include publishable-quality work. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral examination.
