Linguistics, similar to other scientific disciplines, focuses on methodically examining patterns and consistencies within data. For linguists, this data encompasses speech and language - universal human traits that are fundamental to our identity and daily lives.
Over approximately the last century and a half, researchers have accumulated extensive knowledge about language's nature, functioning, acquisition processes, and evolutionary changes. Our Linguistics BA program familiarizes students with these concepts while equipping them with analytical techniques to explore English and global languages.
This undergraduate program enables students to comprehend and analyze diverse facets of human communication. The curriculum covers the scientific foundations of language, including speech sounds and their patterns (phonetics and phonology), word formation (morphology), sentence structure (syntax), meaning interpretation (semantics and pragmatics), social influences on language (sociolinguistics), and historical language development.
Bangor University has offered linguistics education since the 1960s, establishing our department among the UK's pioneering linguistics centers. We maintain a dynamic, welcoming academic community dedicated to exceptional teaching, student support, and innovative research.
Our faculty offers specialized guidance across numerous linguistic disciplines, including: psycholinguistics, language acquisition (both first and second language), discourse analysis, TEFL instruction, corpus linguistics, communication studies, phonetics & phonology, grammatical structures, meaning systems, historical linguistics, language variation, bilingualism, speech pathology, Welsh linguistics, and computational linguistics/NLP.
