This program offers a systematic introduction to advanced historical research. It operates on the fundamental premise that historical knowledge holds intrinsic value, serving as a crucial lens for interpreting both the past and all facets of contemporary life. The study of history establishes a robust intellectual framework transferable to various disciplines, while cultivating essential skills such as research methodology, critical analysis, logical reasoning, empathetic understanding, and independent thinking. The program serves as an excellent pathway for doctoral studies and careers in education, research, and cultural heritage sectors. Participants will enhance their research capabilities while expanding their expertise in specific historical fields, mentored by faculty specializing in early modern and modern Irish, European, and global history. A distinctive Public History Internship option enables students to obtain practical experience through placements at affiliated museums, libraries, and archives.
This full-time MA program spans one academic year, combining on-campus and online instruction. Graduates will develop expertise in analyzing current historiographical debates, gain specialized knowledge through three elective modules, master techniques for sourcing and assessing primary and secondary materials, and demonstrate proficiency in presenting original research findings. The optional Public History Internship further provides hands-on experience at partner cultural institutions.
