Among UL's undergraduate offerings, the B.Sc. in Physical Education consistently attracts high enrollment numbers. This degree prepares students to become certified Physical Education instructors with an additional teaching specialization for Irish secondary schools. Available secondary subjects currently comprise English, Irish (Gaeilge), Geography, and Mathematics.
This program emphasizes teacher preparation, training students to instruct Physical Education alongside their selected elective subject, while also exploring educational theories relevant to modern society. Mandatory school placements for teaching practice form a crucial component of professional growth.
The PE curriculum examines human movement through multiple lenses including kinesiology (movement science), sociology, psychology, and philosophy, combined with pedagogical techniques. Practical components immerse students in diverse activities - from competitive sports to aquatic disciplines and creative movement - all designed to develop comprehensive teaching skills.
