General nursing focuses on providing care for individuals with both short-term and chronic health conditions across hospital and community environments. Registered General Nurses (RGNs) collaborate with patients, families, caregivers, communities, and healthcare teams to deliver proactive, evidence-based holistic care. The BSc Nursing (General) degree equips students with the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes needed to provide compassionate, patient-centered care in dynamic healthcare systems.
This four-year full-time program is delivered by the University of Limerick's Department of Nursing and Midwifery in partnership with Health Service Executive West (covering Limerick, Clare, and North Tipperary). Graduates become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and practice as qualified Registered General Nurses (R.G.N.).
The University of Limerick's nursing programs provide an exceptional learning experience on a prestigious campus, with passionate faculty supporting students through both academic studies and clinical placements with healthcare partners.
The curriculum covers core nursing skills, patient care, communication techniques, health promotion, and infection control. Additional modules include biological sciences, social sciences, psychology, healthcare law and ethics, pharmacology, and evidence-based practice. This intensive four-year program incorporates clinical placements across the Mid-West region. As a dual academic and professional qualification, the course requires significant dedication. Nursing is physically and emotionally demanding, so applicants must demonstrate good health and the capability to meet professional standards. Program admission is contingent upon satisfactory Garda vetting and health screening (including vaccinations), arranged by the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, with potential costs borne by students.
