This program helps you enhance your musical performance abilities in your preferred style(s) while exposing you to diverse global music traditions. You'll expand both your practical skills and academic understanding of music through various performance methods and scholarly approaches. The curriculum includes career-focused modules to help you build a rewarding professional path.
You'll study at the renowned Irish World Academy, equipped with top-tier performance venues and advanced technology. The cooperative education component (Year 3, Semester 1) lets you design your own work placement, gaining hands-on experience for post-graduation opportunities. Graduates pursue careers in performance, composition, academia, arts management, media, music production, and more.
An alternative entry option exists through the Certificate in Music and Dance. Applicants can enroll directly at the University of Limerick, with successful certificate completers eligible to enter the second year of the degree program.
Over four years, you'll receive individual instruction on your primary instrument (or voice) plus world music instruments like the sarode (North India), djembe (West Africa), or rebab (Java).
Ensemble performance forms a central part of the BA World Music experience. You'll join various groups including Indonesian Gamelan, Middle Eastern/Balkan ensembles, Ghanaian Ewe Drumming, and World Popular Music ensembles. Optional performance classes cover Irish traditional arts, vocal studies, and contemporary dance.
The academic curriculum explores world music traditions alongside classical, popular, and folk music. Specialized courses include Global Pop Music, Ethnomusicology, and World Music Survey, complemented by music theory studies spanning Western, Indian, and Middle Eastern traditions.
Alongside core requirements, you'll collaborate with voice, dance, and traditional music students in modules covering arts technology, professional development, and arts in healthcare. Each semester offers elective options across disciplines like history, languages, sociology, and creative arts practice.
