Music has been an academic discipline since ancient times. As one of the seven classical liberal arts, it continues to hold significant importance in higher education, attracting composers, musicologists, performers, technologists, and theorists alike.
Trinity's Performing Arts program earned a spot among the top 100 globally in the 2022 QS Rankings, showcasing its exceptional educational standards. The Music Department at Trinity stands as Ireland's most historic and prestigious institution for musical studies. Its renowned faculty draws top-tier students from Ireland and abroad. Notable graduates feature Derek Bell of The Chieftains, Arts Council Music Director Niall Doyle, Royal Irish Academy of Music Director Deborah Kelleher, TU Dublin Conservatoire Academic Head Kerry Houston, Princeton Professor and composer Donnacha Dennehy, singer-songwriter Eleanor McEvoy, and Irish National Opera founder Fergus Sheil. The department excels in personalized education, with certain courses taught to groups of ten students or less.
Applicants must have completed a high school qualification equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate. General matriculation requirements include pass grades in English, mathematics and a language other than English. Additional requirements may apply for some courses.
