The PhD in Child and Youth Research is a structured four-year full-time or six-year part-time program offered jointly by the School of Psychology and the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre (CFRC) within the School of Political Science and Sociology. This cross-disciplinary program addresses the growing demand for skilled researchers capable of conducting work essential for evidence-based policy development.
The program blends thesis research with instructional coursework. Students must complete a substantial dissertation (approximately 80,000 words). The coursework modules, taken during the first two years, enable participants to expand their knowledge and skills while supporting their thesis development.
Program objectives
To equip students with the expertise to conduct rigorous, policy-relevant research and program assessments involving children and youth
To enhance participants' understanding of key theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and policy issues concerning children
To provide graduates with transferable professional skills for diverse career opportunities
Entrants will be expected to have an upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in a social science. If applicants do not have a degree of that kind, they must have demonstrated high ability by some other means (e.g., through publications or achievement in a higher degree). Garda vetting is required for students participating in this programme.
