The Health Promotion Discipline serves as Ireland's premier hub for professional development and education in health promotion. Linked to this Discipline is the Health Promotion Research Centre, which maintains a vibrant, multidisciplinary research initiative (https://www.universityofgalway.ie/hprc/). The Discipline provides guidance for postgraduate research across diverse fields such as Health Promotion, Population Health, Health Services Research, Social Care, and Occupational Health. Acceptance into a research program depends on approval from both the prospective Supervisor and Head of Discipline, contingent upon submission of a research proposal developed in consultation with a relevant faculty member. Admission is competitive, with available positions determined by staff capacity. Applicants typically need an honors undergraduate degree (minimum Second Class Honors, Grade 1) and, for PhD candidates, often possess a Master's degree in Health Promotion or a related field.
PhD programs in Health Promotion are available both full-time and part-time through either the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences or the College of Arts, Social Science and Celtic Studies. Both Colleges promote structured PhD programs for full-time students, offering interdisciplinary coursework. The extensive selection of modules includes options that: strengthen expertise in the student's specialized field, provide essential research skills for their dissertation, support professional growth, and improve career prospects through transferable skills training. Each candidate receives a primary Supervisor(s) and a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned researchers to design their academic path and offer continuous research support.
