Founded in 1990, the Health Promotion Discipline stands unique in Ireland as the country's premier institution for professional health promotion training and education. The affiliated Health Promotion Research Center conducts diverse interdisciplinary research initiatives. Recognized as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion, this distinction reflects the global reputation of our leadership and team. The WHO Collaborating Centre at University of Galway focuses on enhancing health promotion capabilities by transforming research findings into practical policies and applications.
PhD candidates in the Discipline collaborate extensively with center researchers, who serve as mentors or consultants, guaranteeing research excellence and meaningful advancements in health promotion.
Our PhD program in Health Promotion is both rigorous and sought-after. Alumni have secured positions worldwide as postdoctoral researchers, lecturers, and even professors. Graduates work not just in specialized health promotion institutions but also across complementary fields such as nursing, psychology, and primary care.
Doctoral students actively engage in university life through seminars, workshops, professional development sessions, conference participation, teaching roles, and social activities.
PhD candidates should normally have a high honours standard in a relevant academic discipline at primary degree level or equivalent together with the support of an academic staff member who is approved by the College to supervise the research in terms of its nature and scope.
