The field of Classics is enthusiastic to offer guidance across any research area aligned with the expertise of our faculty members, whose specializations are detailed below. Acceptance into the Structured PhD program depends on approval from both the prospective supervisor and the Head of Discipline, following review of the applicant's proposal developed in consultation with a faculty member. The program may require participation in Greek or Latin language courses as part of the PhD structure. Applicants typically need an honors degree in a relevant field (minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 1) and preferably a Master's qualification.
Within the Structured PhD framework, doctoral candidates access diverse interdisciplinary courses. These offerings include modules designed to: strengthen discipline-specific expertise, such as Reflective Practice in Teaching Classics and Late Antiquity studies
develop dissertation-critical competencies, including supplementary language training
support professional growth opportunities, like presenting at international conferences
boost career prospects through general skills development, including career workshops and IT proficiency sessions.
Every candidate will work with a primary Supervisor(s) and a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned scholars to design their academic path and receive continuous research support.

Qualification Requirements

Admission to a research degree is at the discretion of the Research Committee and is based on a proposal from the applicant, ideally following an informal approach to an appropriate prospective supervisor. We will normally recommend attendance at language classes and/or reading seminars in Latin, Greek and/or medieval languages as appropriate. Candidates should have obtained an honours degree in an appropriate subject (Second Class Honours, Grade 1 minimum [or equivalent international qualification]) and for the PhD will typically hold a Master’s degree.
