The School of English, Drama, and Film at University College Dublin invites prospective PhD candidates to apply. This four-year research program follows a structured framework culminating in a 100,000-word thesis that offers novel scholarly insights. The curriculum incorporates instructional courses, a Research and Professional Development Plan, and opportunities to enhance teaching abilities.
Prospective doctoral candidates aiming for Autumn trimester admission must apply by July 1, 2023 (September 2023 commencement) or June 15, 2024 (September 2024 start). January intake applications are due by October 15, while May starters should complete their submissions by March 1.
To be eligible to enter one of UCD’s PhD programmes, a candidate must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree. In some cases, a Master’s degree may also be required. In certain cases, a candidate may be able to provide other evidence to the School in order to satisfy the entry requirements of the programme.
IELTS: An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by Princeton University:
A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +.
A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section
Cambridge Examinations
English language examinations administered by the University of Cambridge: 176+ on Cambridge English scale (with no less than 169 in each skill and use of English)
Acceptable Examinations:
Proficiency Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2).
Advanced Certificate, Grade C (i.e. CEFR Level C1 or C2)
First Certificate, Grade A (i.e. CEFR Level C1)
Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item in the Communicative Skills section.
