Founded in 1990, the Discipline of Health Promotion stands as Ireland's sole specialized program in this field, serving as the nation's hub for professional health promotion training and education. The affiliated Health Promotion Research Center maintains a vibrant multidisciplinary research initiative (). Recognized as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Health Promotion, this designation reflects the global reputation of our leadership and team. The WHO Collaborating Centre at University of Galway focuses on enhancing health promotion capabilities by transforming research findings into practical policies and applications.
MPhil candidates in the Discipline collaborate extensively with center researchers, who serve as mentors or consultants, ensuring rigorous standards and meaningful contributions to this research domain.
Graduate researchers actively engage in university life, participating in seminars, workshops, training sessions, conference organization, teaching activities, and social gatherings.
To be eligible to enter a programme of study, it is expected that applicants would have:
an Honours undergraduate Degree (2.1 or above) level qualification in Health Promotion, Social Care or a relevant discipline or such other evidence as would satisfy the Head of Discipline AND
Evidence of an IELTS qualification minimum level 7 overall, and in each component.
Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (20 Listening, 20 Speaking, 24 Writing, 19 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 61 in any one component.
