The Bachelor of Nursing Science (General) program is a four-year undergraduate degree offered in collaboration with the Health Service Executive (HSE) West, Blackrock Health Galway Clinic, and Bon Secours Hospital Galway. The curriculum combines academic study with hands-on clinical training. Classroom instruction delivers foundational knowledge through lectures, seminars, workshops, practical exercises, and skill development. Clinical rotations occur in hospital environments, community healthcare settings, and specialized facilities. Graduates qualify to register as General Nurses with Ireland's Nursing and Midwifery Board, a credential recognized worldwide.
The initial three years follow the standard academic calendar, blending classroom learning with clinical placements requiring 32 weekly hours of practical work. The final year features theoretical instruction in the first semester followed by a 36-week paid internship from January through September, during which students become HSE Saolta Group employees.
Career Prospects
Graduates can pursue nursing roles across diverse healthcare environments, both in hospitals and community settings. With its global recognition, this nursing degree enables professionals to seek international employment opportunities to expand their clinical experience.
Minimum Grade H5 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at O6/H7 level in the Leaving Certificate, including Irish, English, Mathematics, a laboratory science subject (i.e. Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics with Chemistry (joint) or Agricultural Science), and any two other subjects recognised for entry purposes.
