In this specialized field, intellectual disability nurses collaborate within multidisciplinary teams to support individuals with intellectual disabilities in reaching their maximum potential. Intellectual disabilities impact two key areas: cognitive abilities (including learning, decision-making, and problem-solving) and adaptive skills (such as daily communication and independent living). This program equips students with the professional expertise, practical skills, and compassionate approach required for intellectual disability care.
The comprehensive curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with clinical practice. Students undertake clinical placements across various settings, including child development programs, behavioral disorder management, acute nursing care, and specialized disability services. Graduates qualify for registration with Ireland's Nursing and Midwifery Board (NMBI), opening doors to diverse career paths in acute care, community services, residential facilities, educational institutions, and home healthcare. Additional opportunities exist in healthcare administration, therapeutic services, academic research, and international practice or further studies.
The globally recognized qualification enables graduates to practice as Intellectual Disability Nurses worldwide while meeting the professional registration requirements of Bord Altranais agus Cnímhseachais na hÉireann (NMBI). Employment prospects span community health centers, educational settings, occupational health services, and conventional healthcare institutions. Career advancement opportunities include clinical specialization, leadership roles, academic positions, and research pathways.
