The four-year full-time BSc Nursing (Intellectual Disability) degree is delivered by the University of Limerick's Department of Nursing & Midwifery in partnership with AV'STA, a disability support service. This program holds accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Students benefit from varied class sizes - smaller groups for specialized modules and larger lectures for interdisciplinary nursing courses. Practical learning is enhanced through Clinical Skill Laboratory sessions and tutorials alongside classroom instruction. The curriculum includes extensive clinical placements across diverse settings such as early intervention programs, day services, residential care, respite facilities, and community environments. Graduates become eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland as Registered Intellectual Disability Nurses (RNID).
This comprehensive program develops analytical, reflective practitioners equipped with the expertise and values needed to deliver compassionate care for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. Grounded in principles of inclusion and empowerment, the curriculum blends humanistic values with scientific knowledge and research to address the holistic needs - physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual - of people with intellectual disabilities.
Nursing requires significant physical and emotional resilience. Prospective students must demonstrate good health and the capacity to meet all professional nursing competencies. Admission to the program is contingent upon satisfactory completion of medical assessments, health declarations, and required vaccinations.
