The UCD School of Archaeology invites prospective PhD candidates across all archaeological disciplines and World Heritage studies. Our four-year doctoral program offers a structured framework featuring research training, coursework, a Professional Development Plan, and teaching opportunities. Each candidate receives dedicated primary supervision and comprehensive academic support throughout their independent research journey, typically leading to publishable scholarly work. Our faculty brings extensive supervisory experience and diverse specializations, with active field projects across Europe and Asia, and research spanning from heritage conservation to experimental archaeology. Numerous graduates have secured postdoctoral funding after completing their doctoral studies with us.

NonUCD Graduates should also provide the following documentation as an electronic copy upload to their online application and as original hard copy documents by post to the School Administrator at UCD School of Archaeology to complete the application process

Official transcripts giving date of award and standard of primary degree and any other degrees or diplomas or transcripts of academic performance to date for those who have not yet completed their degree
Two academic references One to be the Head of SchoolProfessor of the major subject which you pursued in your primary degree Must be original signed documentation on Institutional headed paper
For overseas candidates whose first language is not English a certificate of proficiency in the English language such as TOEFL Cambridge or IELTS must be provided

IELTS - An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band.
TOEFL IBT - iBT 90 no less than 21 in writing and at least 19 in every other section in the Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL.
