The Dual MA in International War Studies is a collaborative program between University College Dublin and Germany's University of Potsdam, home to the country's sole Chair of Military History. Participants will complete one year of study at each university. This unique arrangement allows students to engage with distinct academic systems (in Ireland and Germany) while benefiting from the vibrant cultural scenes and research resources available in Dublin, Potsdam, and neighboring Berlin.

While all instruction is conducted in English, participants are advised to develop proficiency in another language to enhance their global competitiveness. The curriculum provides an in-depth exploration of 20th-century warfare history, with all courses taught by distinguished specialists in the field, guaranteeing research-driven education.

This program equips students to:

Develop thorough expertise in key aspects of 20th-century military history
Understand diverse historical methodologies and interpretations of warfare
Locate and evaluate credible primary sources for military history research
Master fundamental analytical approaches and theoretical frameworks in war studies

Qualification Requirements

Applicants need an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university Students will have a minimum qualification of 2-1 in a relevant subject or an equivalent UCD GPA of 3.08

For non-English speakers evidence of language proficiency is required for example IELTS of 6.5 overall or equivalent in TOEFL with no band lower than 60 Students who achieve an IELTS of 6.0 with no band lower than 5.5 will need to attend a presessional language course Students will be selected by a joint board composed by senior academics from UCD and Potsdam
TOEFL IBT - iBT 90 no less than 21 in writing and at least 19 in every other section in the Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL.
