This program is designed for individuals engaged in creative sound projects, encompassing composed or recorded pieces, improvisational works, sound installations, multimedia art with audio elements, musical theater, performance pieces, and more. The curriculum covers technical skills, artistic concepts, repertoire development, collaboration with musicians, audiovisual technology, and practical aspects of presenting creative works.
Students from diverse artistic backgrounds are welcome, and the program encourages exploration across a wide spectrum of creative approaches. Faculty expertise spans contemporary classical music, electronic dance music, avant-garde composition, video-sound art, spontaneous performance, acoustic ecology, and environmental recording. A foundational understanding of audio technology is required.
The MA in Experimental Sound Practice is a full-time, one-year program consisting of 90 credits, combining structured coursework with guided independent creative projects.
A part-time study option is available over two years (daytime study). Part-time students' course schedules are arranged in consultation with the Music Department.
In order to be permitted to proceed to the MA in Experimental Sound Practice, a candidate must hold a Second Class Honours Grade II in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) or higher, and demonstrate experience in the creation of music or other sonic art.
Applicants with an appropriate professional equivalent (e.g. professional musician or another artist of high standing, etc.) will also be considered under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Final acceptance is subject to approval by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, UCC.
