The M.Phil. in Theatre and Performance combines theoretical study with hands-on experience to cultivate tomorrow's theatre professionals, scholars, innovators, and industry leaders. This intensive program enhances students' analytical, critical, and practical skills through diverse teaching methods including lectures, small-group seminars, tutorials, studio work, and personalized supervision for placements and independent projects.
Located at the center of Dublin's vibrant theatre culture (while maintaining global connections), the program provides multiple external engagement opportunities with international theatre artists (through events like the Dublin Theatre Festival and Brussels Kunstenfestivaldesarts), active members of Ireland's theatre community (via institutions such as the Abbey Theatre and Arts Council), and specialized networking tailored to individual student interests.
Instruction comes from faculty with global recognition in both academic research and performance practice, known for publishing influential works, creating award-winning productions, and pioneering theatre education methods. Faculty expertise spans areas including Shakespearean drama, intercultural performance, Irish theatre history, gender studies in performance, Beckett scholarship, practice-led research, and dramaturgical studies.
Candidates should have a good Honours 1st class or 2.1 B.A. degree (minimum "B", average 3.0 or above for North American students) or equivalent qualification with a minimum
IELTS score of 6.5 with no individual band below 6. Applicants will be asked to submit writing samples and to interview before admission.
