The study of speech and language processing approaches language from two complementary angles. Speech processing focuses on the scientific aspects of verbal communication, exploring how speech is produced by speakers and interpreted by listeners. This field also examines processing methods for modeling speech in ways that could be technologically applied, like in speech synthesis systems. Speech science bridges multiple disciplines including acoustics, linguistics, engineering, psychology, and physiology, playing a crucial role in understanding speech disorders.

Similarly, language processing tackles the computational side of linguistics. It explores grammatical structures and semantic theories while providing foundational knowledge in linguistics as both a scientific field and engineering practice. From an engineering standpoint, it develops technological applications and tools that utilize linguistic insights, such as text prediction systems, virtual assistants, and search engines.

The M.Phil. in Speech and Language Processing provides an exclusive, customized curriculum with adaptable course structures based on your linguistic interests. Featuring small class sizes, instruction from leading specialists, and an extensive selection of optional modules each year, this program offers exceptional academic opportunities.
