Dental technicians operate in off-site laboratories, separate from dental clinics. Following dentists' prescriptions, they handle the laboratory components of dental care, creating crowns, bridges, dentures, implants, and orthodontic or maxillofacial devices for patient use. These professionals possess excellent hand-eye coordination and must skillfully manipulate various materials to craft different dental appliances. The field of dental technology is evolving, with increasing focus on CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technologies in lab work.
Applicants must have completed a high school qualification equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate. General matriculation requirements include pass grades in English, mathematics and a language other than English. Additional requirements may apply for some courses.
