English studies focuses on examining the evolution and traditions of English writing, covering literary works from English, Anglo-Irish, American, and post-colonial societies. This discipline seeks to provide comprehensive understanding of these literary histories while fostering advanced analytical skills and familiarity with critical and cultural theories.
Unlike Joint Honours students, those specializing in English Studies explore a broader historical scope (extending before 1300) and examine additional subjects like Popular Literature and Children's Literature.
Applicants must have completed a high school qualification equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate. General matriculation requirements include pass grades in English, mathematics and a language other than English. Additional requirements may apply for some courses.
