Classical Languages focuses on the linguistic, literary, and philosophical traditions of either Ancient Greece or Rome. Students select either Greek or Latin for specialization. By engaging with original texts and exploring significant historical elements, learners gain comprehensive insights into classical antiquity while cultivating analytical skills for evaluating textual and material artifacts.
Trinity College has maintained its Greek and Latin instruction since its establishment over four centuries ago, standing out as the sole institution with dedicated professorships for both languages. Exploring Greco-Roman civilization means tracing the foundations of Western society, uncovering the roots of our political and cultural frameworks, and recognizing how classical heritage continues to shape modern ideologies. The Classics Department enjoys global recognition, with courses led by leading scholars in their disciplines. Instruction combines lectures, hands-on sessions, and intimate seminars that foster dynamic debates and independent thought. Students also have opportunities for international study, ranging from a single semester to a full academic year.
Applicants must have completed a high school qualification equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate. General matriculation requirements include pass grades in English, mathematics and a language other than English. Additional requirements may apply for some courses.
