This program provides doctoral studies in Music for students aiming to conduct advanced research in specialized areas of the field. The PhD/MLitt in Music also incorporates various general and discipline-specific skill modules, enhancing its research-focused components within Maynooth University's structured graduate framework.
Thesis topics require approval from the Head of Department or Departmental Research Committee and must involve original investigation supervised by an appointed faculty member. The Performance PhD option caters to musicians seeking to pioneer creative projects where performance serves as a core component of academic inquiry. Through establishing relevant critical and theoretical foundations, these projects aim to push boundaries in musical scholarship. The degree requirements consist of a 40,000-50,000 word thesis paired with a 90-minute recital. Assessment involves a viva voce examination with an impartial chair and two evaluators (one internal, one external), followed by a public performance attended by the examination panel.
