The School of Music ranks among Ireland's premier institutions for advanced musical education and holds a position in the QS World Top 100 for Performing Arts. Our graduate programs enable students to collaborate with globally recognized scholars across key disciplines including historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and composition. The PhD and MLitt programs provide the framework for undertaking significant research projects under specialist supervision or developing a composition portfolio.
UCD's graduate students thrive in a welcoming, collaborative research environment that emphasizes ongoing engagement between faculty and students. We celebrate our students' academic leadership: current cohorts edit 'The Musicology Review', lead the Dublin Musicology Collective, and actively contribute to organizing our seminar series. The yearly Graduate Colloquium serves as a platform for presenting developing work, while the PhD Forum creates a nurturing space to explore research methodologies and career advancement.
Students can earn the MLitt degree following two years of study and submission of a comprehensive thesis. After one year of research, MLitt candidates may transition to the PhD program with supervisor endorsement and School approval. The structured PhD program spans 3-4 years, culminating in an extended dissertation.
