This program provides doctoral-level studies in Music for individuals seeking to conduct advanced research in specialized fields. The PhD/MLitt in Music incorporates both general and discipline-specific skill development modules, enhancing the research-focused components within Maynooth University's structured graduate framework.
PhD candidates in Composition create a diverse collection of works spanning ninety minutes. Alternative formats (such as submitting one major composition) may be considered with written approval from both the advisor and Department Chair. The portfolio requires an accompanying written analysis between 12,000 and 30,000 words. When feasible, audio recordings of performances should supplement the submission. Final evaluation consists of an oral defense before two examiners (one internal, one external) and an impartial moderator.

Qualification Requirements
Normally a 2.1 or equivalent first degree in Music or in a related discipline, a 2.1 or equivalent Master's degree in Music or in a related discipline. Further to application via PAC, an interview will be conducted, where students are expected to present a research plan to the department. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact members of staff in their projected area of research.
To undertake a PhD programme, you must have high honours standard in your primary degree (normally an overall 2.1 honours award at bachelors or master's level), or present other evidence that satisfies the head of department and the relevant faculty of your suitability.

TOEFL internet-based test - iBT: 90 with no less than 21 in writing and at least 19 in every other section
