The Master of Divinity (MDiv) program equips students with both academic knowledge and practical skills for a fulfilling career in Christian ministry.
Designed to prepare individuals for parish, institutional, and administrative roles, the curriculum covers theology, biblical studies, counseling, ethics, church history, worship practices, and leadership. The MDiv program offers two tracks: contextual and coursework. Completion time ranges from 24 to 36 months, varying by chosen track and study intensity (full-time or part-time).
The coursework track suits those currently engaged in ministry or pursuing non-congregational vocations, enabling students to select specialized electives instead of completing internships and seminars required in the contextual track.
All MDiv students at Luther begin in the coursework track by default, which comprises 25 courses plus a Spiritual and Personal Formation (SPE) unit. The SPE component typically occurs in a clinical environment during the second year or as a concentrated summer program.
Students must have the following:
English Proficiency
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
TOEFL iBT: minimum score of 89, with minimum skill scores of 21 in each of the skills tests (speaking, writing, reading and listening).
Paper-based TOEFL: minimum of 573.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS): minimum score of 7.
Pearson Test of English (PTE): minimum score of 60.
The Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: minimum score of 70.
