The Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies provides a distinctive interdisciplinary Master's program enabling students to tailor their studies to any subject related to the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, spanning from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. This is achieved through coursework and thesis work. Participants can select from diverse courses covering archaeology, material culture, religion, mythology, literature, ancient languages, history, and cultures of these ancient regions. During their second year, students complete a thesis under faculty guidance, combining academic research with practical fieldwork to equip them for careers in archaeology.

PROGRAM DISTINCTIONS
The MA in Ancient Culture, Religion and Ethnicity capitalizes on our Department's unique interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to explore diverse subjects and conduct cross-disciplinary research on the material culture, religious traditions, languages, and histories of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. Our sixteen full-time faculty members specialize in various areas including Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean archaeology, Mesopotamian studies, Greek material culture, Roman provincial archaeology, Hebrew Bible studies, Jewish studies, Christian origins, New Testament studies, Greek and Latin literature, philosophy, history, Roman law, theater studies, and mythology. All faculty members engage in interdisciplinary research, frequently collaborating across specialties. Graduate students also have access to archaeological fieldwork opportunities throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, with active projects in Romania, Cyprus, and Israel.

Qualification Requirements

All MA programs require a bachelor’s degree, normally in Classics (Latin and Greek), Classical Studies (non-language program), Near Eastern Studies, or Religious Studies and at least 18 credits at the 300 and 400 level in courses directly related to the intended field of study.
