Examine the forces that influence daily life through the lens of gender in modern society. Our curriculum helps cultivate an analytical approach considering elements like biological sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial background, socioeconomic status, and physical ability. You may experience profound shifts in perception as you employ these frameworks across academic disciplines and personal experiences. Our program showcases the growing scope of feminist scholarship, encompassing gender theory, LGBTQ+ studies, healthcare, legal matters, philosophical inquiry, gender-based violence, workplace equality, and women in artistic expression.
The Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies Department was formally recognized at The University of Western Ontario in July 2006. Originating as the Women's Studies program in 1987, it now operates as an interdisciplinary department spanning both the Arts and Humanities and Social Science faculties. Students can pursue diverse degree options while benefiting from visiting scholars, an acclaimed lecture series, academic seminars, yearly symposia, and scholarly works. The department also maintains an engaged Women's Studies Student Association.
