Examine the forces that influence your daily life as someone navigating gender in modern society. Our curriculum helps you cultivate an analytical viewpoint considering elements like sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, socioeconomic status, and physical ability. You may discover your outlook profoundly changes as you implement these frameworks across your academic pursuits and personal experiences. Our program showcases the growing scope of feminist scholarship, covering areas from gender theory and LGBTQ+ studies to health equity, legal challenges, philosophical inquiry, gender-based violence, workplace equality, and women in the arts.
The Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies department was formally created at The University of Western Ontario in July 2006. Originating as the Women's Studies program in 1987, it now operates as an interdisciplinary department within both the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Social Science. Students can pursue various degree options while benefiting from initiatives that advance feminist research, including visiting scholar programs, an acclaimed lecture series, academic seminars, yearly symposia, and scholarly works. The department also maintains an engaged Women's Studies Student Council that fosters community involvement.
