Women's and gender studies is an engaging interdisciplinary field that examines diverse social justice, political, and cultural topics. Learners investigate and engage with contemporary and historical discussions surrounding women's lived experiences, gender dynamics, racial issues, socioeconomic structures, and systemic oppression.
This program examines numerous women-focused social, political, and cultural subjects through multiple lenses. As a vibrant cross-disciplinary field, it incorporates various theoretical and practical perspectives, covering areas like media and consumer culture, gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ studies, women in STEM fields, spatial relationships, Indigenous feminist thought, men's studies, and historical contexts. The feminist movement of the 1960s-70s in North America sparked the creation of numerous organizations and institutions that prioritized women's lived realities. At the University of Manitoba, Women's Studies emerged as an academic discipline in the early 1970s through the efforts of dedicated feminist scholars who recognized the need for specialized programming addressing women's concerns. We remain deeply indebted to the pioneering women who established our program during an era when female faculty were scarce on campus, and creating dedicated spaces to examine women's issues represented a courageous academic innovation.

Qualification Requirements
The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the Women's and Gender Studies (BA) program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
Direct entry applicants are those who have not attended a post-secondary institution or have completed fewer than 24 credit hours at a recognized university or college.
Advanced entry applicants are those who have completed one year (24 credit hours) or more of studies in another faculty at the University of Manitoba or another recognized post-secondary institution.
