Examine the forces that influence daily life through the lens of gender in modern society. Our curriculum teaches critical analysis incorporating elements like biological sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial background, socioeconomic status, and physical ability. You may discover your perspectives shifting as you employ these frameworks across academic disciplines and personal experiences. Our program showcases the growing scope of feminist scholarship, covering areas from gender theory and LGBTQ+ studies to health policy, legal rights, philosophical inquiry, gender-based violence, workplace equality, and women in the arts.
The Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies department was formally created at The University of Western Ontario in July 2006. Originating as the Women's Studies program in 1987, it now operates as an interdisciplinary department spanning both Arts and Humanities and Social Science faculties. Students can pursue various degree options while benefiting from visiting scholars, an acclaimed lecture series, academic seminars, yearly conferences, and scholarly publications. The department also maintains an engaged Women's Studies Student Council that fosters community involvement.
