To earn an MSc degree, candidates must successfully complete a thesis proposal, final thesis, and defend their work. Additionally, they must fulfill all coursework obligations. Each student is assigned an Advisory Committee that offers support, guidance, and progress evaluations to facilitate degree completion. Full-time students must present their thesis research proposal to their committee by the end of their third term (sixth term for part-time students). The minimum full-time enrollment requirement is 2 terms, with a maximum duration of 6 terms (2 years). Extensions require submitting a Petition of Extension with a proposed completion timeline. The University of Waterloo's School of Optometry and Vision Science is Canada's sole provider of accredited English-language Doctor of Optometry training, alongside its Vision Science graduate program. Its clinical programs offer students hands-on experience while delivering public health services.
The program focuses on advancing knowledge about normal and abnormal development, structure, and function of ocular and visual sensory systems, effector-motor nervous components, and the effects of neural aging.
