To earn an MSc degree, candidates must successfully complete a thesis proposal, write their thesis, and defend it. Additionally, they must fulfill all course requirements. Each student is assigned an Advisory Committee that offers support, guidance, and monitors progress to facilitate degree completion. By the conclusion of their third term (or sixth for part-time students), MSc candidates must formally present their proposed thesis research to their advisory committee. Full-time MSc students must register for at least 2 terms, with a maximum duration of 6 terms (2 years). Those needing extra time must submit a Petition of Extension with a proposed completion timeline. The University of Waterloo's School of Optometry and Vision Science is Canada's sole provider of accredited English-language optometric training for the Doctor of Optometry degree. It also offers graduate programs in Vision Science and Optometry. Comprehensive clinical programs enhance student training while delivering healthcare services to the public.
Research spans both fundamental and applied areas, including optics, vision correction, contact lens materials, ophthalmic standards (such as visual ergonomics), imaging, device development, assistive technologies, and soft metrology.
