The Biology Department provides graduate programs leading to both M.Sc. (Master of Science) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees, with a thesis requirement. Students in these programs must complete coursework, typically chosen from Biology Department offerings, though courses from other university departments or institutions may count with advisory committee approval. A minimum of two courses must be selected from the Biology Department's curriculum. Additionally, all graduate students must complete the Graduate Academic Integrity Module, an online course to be finished within the initial eight weeks of their first term, which will appear on their academic record. The Integrity Office will reach out regarding this requirement, distinct from the mandatory Academic Integrity Workshop.
Molecular Biology has been a departmental focus since recombinant DNA technology emerged. This specialization expanded through strategic faculty appointments during the 1990s and 2000s, making molecular approaches fundamental to departmental research. The Department now pioneers innovative research and education in Synthetic Biology, which it characterizes as integrating biological science with engineering principles to create organisms and biological systems for specific applications.
